The Melbourne Forum: Kids and the City

The University of Melbourne and Museum Victoria present

THE MELBOURNE FORUM
Kids & the City

- a series on the joys, perils and challenges confronting children and young people in Melbourne.*

19 July - A child friendly Melbourne
What kind of city are we building for our kids? Are our children growing fat and frightened because we won't let them out by themselves? Planners, educators and lobbyists talk about building a city that's great for children as well as adults.

2 August - Suicide and Self-harm in the Young
Why are rates of youth suicide and self-harm at an all-time high? Are changes in the family, communities or youth culture to blame? Are computers or the internet adding to the risk? And what is to be done? Adolescent psychiatrist George Patton will discuss these issues together with people who've been touched by suicide in the young.

16 August - They don't play like they used to?
Play is crucial to the happiness and development of children. But are children today still given the time and space to play that they once enjoyed? When should adults help children play? And when should we give them the freedom to do what they do best? Children's folklore experts June Factor and Gwenda Davey join museum curator Carla Pascoe to discuss play from the past and today.

30 August - Sex, kids and advertising
Sex sells. But do advertisers overstep the mark when they sell lingerie, lipstick and sex-appeal to the tweenies? Or is this just a case of little girls playing dress-ups? What's the age of consent for child-customers? Julie Gale from Kids Free to be Kids and the panel debate the issues.

13 September - The great education debate
We've heard the issues: core values, national curriculum, welfare, single-sex education, private v. public, and literacy and numeracy standards. But what do we really want from our schools? What kind of education do our kids deserve? A panel of experts debate the challenges.
