Comp: Memorial Park, Wellington
To All NZIA Practice Members
The Ministry for Culture and Heritage proposes to create a memorial park in front of the National War Memorial in Wellington. The park is intended to improve the setting of the National War Memorial, to create a space in the capital city for the development of new memorials from countries which New Zealand has a close relationship with and to provide a space for people to congregate on ceremonial occasions as well as provide a space that can be utilised by day to day users.
In order to maximise the integration of the park into the memorial precinct, it is suggested that Buckle Street be realigned to the north to maximise the space that is not vehicle dominated. This realignment should enhance and support the park while minimising any left over space.
As we have done for previous memorial projects such as the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior and the New Zealand Memorial in London, the Ministry will run a two stage selection process first calling for expressions of interest, selecting a shortlist to submit actual designs and then selecting the final design.
For previous memorial projects the Institute of Architects and Institute of Landscape Architects has kindly assisted the Ministry in notifying members about the competition. I would be grateful if this could happen again. Information on the design selection process will be available on the Ministrys website as of Monday 28 May at www.mch.govt.nz
