Contemporary architectural design in Tokyo: Chiba Manabu Architects

The context of Tokyo is difficult to describe because its shape is changing daily, like a metabolic process. Architects designing in such a changeable context draw on the potential of a site to suggest possible solutions. Designing buildings in a city like Tokyo therefore involves interpreting its context in creative ways, similar to the processes of reconstructing a city. Similarly, the future shape of Tokyo is being created by observing its existing context and evolving new urban forms.

Manabu Chiba is Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, Graduate School of Engineering at The University of Tokyo. He is also the principal of Chiba Manabu Architects which he established in 2001. Since then he has won many design awards in Japan including the Architectural Institute of Japan Award in 2003 and the 21st Yoshioka Award in 2005. Some recent projects include: House in Black, Ohta-ku, Tokyo (2001); MESH, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo (2004); Tokyo House UNAGI001, Taito-ku, Tokyo (2005); Japan Guide Dog Centre, Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture (2006); Studio Gotenyama, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo (2006); Platform, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture (2006)
