What is Built Environment Education?
BEE has three main components: curriculum resources, teacher training and the Designers in Schools program.

The objectives of BEE are:
*to bring about a greater awareness and understanding of the built environment and its relationship and interdependence with the natural environment
*to provide a resource for students and teachers to enable the study of traditional curriculum subjects with a focus on issues related to the built environment
*to help students and teachers analyse their surroundings, showing them that built structures result from decisions taken by a range of people and to illustrate how they can be part of that process
*to involve students and teachers in the design process by bringing the analytical and problem solving methods of design into the school
*where possible, to involve students in projects with a tangible outcome

What is Designers in Schools?
The BEE Designers in Schools program is based on the highly successful Architects in Schools program which was run by the RAIA from 1979 to the early 1990s.

Designers in Schools has been fully funded by the Victorian Department of Education & Training for the next three years, and has been marked as a Year of the Built Environment legacy project.

The program was conceived as an opportunity for designers in the built environment (architects, landscape architects, interior designers, engineers, planners, etc.) to work with students, teachers and broader school communities to explore issues surrounding the built environment, using students’ perceptions of their surroundings as tools by which they can become aware of the built environment and their own ability to influence it.

If you are interested in:
*becoming a resident in a school, receiving training and resources to develop a program for your school and committing 60 hours in one term to that school for an honorarium of $50 per hour
*selecting, evaluating and modifying materials for the BEE website, or
*joining a committee to help develop this and other BEE programs

please come along to the information evening and see how you can get involved!
