Lebanese Reconstruction to Commence
The United Nation's IRINnews announced yesterday that the Lebanese government is to commence reconstruction. The President of the Lebanese Government's Council for Development and Reconstruction said that new buildings would be better than before, and that there was a lot to be done. "The Israelis did not miss anything, from schools to clinics to bridges to roads."
According to IRRINnews, the toll on Lebanon's buildings and infrastructure is: 15,000 houses; 900 businesses and factories; 630 roads; 77 bridges; 25 fuel stations and 31 utility plants. The damages bill could be anywhere between US $3B and $15B. Taking into account continuing power shortages and difficulty in moving goods through the ports, the economic damage is continuing. The Age's Sarah Smiles reported today that the UN Development Program estimates Lebanon's economic recovery has been set back 15 years by the events of the last six weeks.
