Libeskind Tsunami reconstruction project-update

I have recently started working for a UK based charity called Unawatuna 2612. Our aim is to rebuild the village of Unawatuna, Sri Lanka, which was badly hit by the tsunami of 26/12/04. Last year we enlisted the support of Daniel Libeskind to design new village buildings, including housing, a community centre and craft centre.

The immediate physical effect of the Tsunami is well-documented. However, over a year later, the psychological damage is still taking its toll on villagers. Loss of livelihoods and business premises have left them bereft of means to restart their lives. After extensive consultation with over 400 individual villagers, and local community groups, Unawatuna 2612 put together a draft proposal which was read and approved by policy makers at local and national level.

Our aim is to regenerate the Tsunami-hit village through a building program and through providing training and business incubation centres, towards long-term and sustainable poverty relief. We have a full set of plans drawn up by Studio Daniel Libeskind. Studio staff made 5 fact-finding site visits and a full site survey before producing the scheme. Local and national Sri Lankan authorities have seen and approved the plans, offering their endorsement.

We are now fundraising to enable the work to begin. If any one reading this can help us in any way, please reply to this posting. If you have media contacts, we can send you a press release. You could ask people in your office to do a sponsored event. We really need to spread the word and make this happen.

Thanks,

Katy Beinart

Katy, I just became aware of this post, hope it is not too late to assist.
It is good to hear that something really concrete is being done to assist this village and that one of our members is involved in it.
Please let us know is you would like to have this, or an update, included in our next newsletter (October). It would also be good if you could send us something about you and your work in relation to this project.
    Best of luck,
    Beatriz
