Design a futuristic light rail transport vehicle for the year 2020

Lab.3000 is excited to announce a university student design competition for the creation of the next Melbourne tram. The competition offers all Victorian university undergraduates a challenge that will expand their thinking, challenge their creativity and build their team experience. The winning team will receive professional work experience in Paris with generous prizes for their respective university departments.

The Challenge
University design and engineering undergraduate students (individually or in teams of no more than 3 members) are invited to submit designs for a futuristic light rail transport vehicle for the year 2020 – a vehicle that could operate within Melbourne’s existing networks and infrastructure. The design must be limited to the internal and external design of the tram.

Competitors are to take into account future social needs as outlined in the Melbourne 2030 Plan, the changing nature of commuter expectations, computer terminals and network points. The design will use an existing bogie and chassis structure but futuristic interior and exterior designs are welcomed.

The Sponsors
‘LightRail toward 2020’ is proudly supported by ALSTOM Australia Limited -Transport with generous prizes to the winning students. Additional sponsors will include Yarra Trams and United Group Ltd.

The Prize
1st prize The successful team (maximum of 3 students per group) will be rewarded with an opportunity to live in Paris and to work and be mentored at the ALSTOM Transport Design Centre for 2 months. The prize will include the cost of accommodation by a month salary of 800 Euros , living expense in a 1 room with kitchen apartment allowance and return economy class airfares from Melbourne to Paris. All other expenses including return airport to accommodation transfers, spending money, , taxes, insurance, transport to and from Melbourne, passport, visa and other ancillary costs are the responsibility of the winner(s).

Plus the University department in which the winners are enrolled will also receive equipment to the value of:

The Opportunity
The competition has been devised to challenge and engage the students, and consider a range of social, environmental and technical issues relating to Melbourne’s transport network. These may include transport’s sustainability, cars in the CBD, use of the tram system for senior citizens, the disabled, bicycle users and parents with prams.

Submissions of Applications
All 1st round applications must be submitted online. There will be opportunities prior to submission to discuss the design concepts with representatives from ALSTOM.

Exhibition
Lab.3000 is planning an exhibition of the 10 finalists whose designs will be re-produced for display. Details for this will be confirmed with the finalists directly. All co-coordinators, entrants and their families will be invited to the exhibition where the winner/s of the competition will be announced.

The competition exhibition will also form part of The State of Design 2006 celebrations.

Wednesday 2 August Shortlisting of the 10 finalists begins

11 – 27 October Exhibition of ten finalists (Venue to be confirmed)

Wednesday 11 October Exhibition Opening Night - winner of the competition announced
