Special Public Lectures
Design, government and politics:
Creating quality in the built environment or pandering to political agendas?

University of Melbourne Asia Center, Carrillo Gantner Theatre
Saturday 27 May, 10am - 12:30pm
Government architects have been playing a fundamental, if patchy, part in the construction of urban Australia’s heritage and its institutional infrastructure.

In recent years, government architects have been appointed in new roles in Queensland, Western Australia, Northern Territory and, most recently, in Victoria. They join the office of the NSW Government Architect that commenced in 1816.

These new appointments face different challenges from their predecessors. Their role is no longer focused on the production of buildings but is rather an advisory one, suggesting spatial priorities, formulating strategies, developing public policy and overseeing due procurement processes. How does this contemporary role connect to the quality of Australian places? How does it respond to the political pressures of working within government?

In the attempt to provide answers, six government architects will lead a public discussion on their position in relation to the political process and the ability of their office to institute change in the built environment.

Speakers:
John Denton, Government Architect of Victoria
Shelley Penn, Associate Government Architect of Victoria
Geoffrey London, Government Architect of Western Australia
Peter Mould, Government Architect of New South Wales
Peter Poulet, Design Director of the NSW Government Architect Design Directorate (GADD)
Wayne Petrie, Interim Government Architect of Queensland
