PRIME Minister John Howard has launched a bitter attack on AWB, accusing it of deceiving the Government and trading on the trust it enjoyed.
Fresh from giving evidence to the Cole inquiry, Mr Howard went in boots and all against the company, telling a news conference it had systematically misled the Foreign Affairs Department.
As well, it had misled the Volcker Inquiry, the United Nations, former Chief Justice Anthony Mason who had defended it in a legal opinion the Wheat Export Authority and the accountancy firm Ferrier Hodgson.
"I hold the view people in AWB traded on the immense level of trust (that existed)," Mr Howard said. (....)
