REFORMS FLAGGED FOR ARCHITECTS, SURVEYORS

Legislation that will reform the professional regulation of architects and surveyors, in line with national competition policy, passed the lower house of State Parliament today.

Planning Minister Mary Delahunty said the Architects (Amendment) Bill 2004 would remove several anti-competitive provisions and also remove restrictions on the use of the terms "architecture" and "architectural".

She said the Bill promoted use of the terms "architectural service", "architectural design services" and "architectural design" and protected use of these terms.

"The removal of broad restrictions over the use of these terms achieves a relaxation of unnecessary limitations on other businesses, while maintaining appropriate regulation of the practice of the profession of architecture,'' Ms Delahunty said.

She said the amendments also relate to:
· Prohibited conduct
· Approvals of partnerships and companies
· Resolution of complaints by mediation
· Requirements for membership of the Architects Registration Board
· Insurance requirements
