Biancardi House, Hawthorn
I have received news that the Biancardi House at 20 Yarra Street, Hawthorn, is being altered. My informant informs of, "fairly violent alterations under way to the front", of the house. He continues: "This house originally designed by the University of Melbourne husband - wife pair of academics and architects Gerd and Renate Block for their own use is classified by the National Trust as having State significance and identified in the Kew conservation study as significant and worthy of protection. It was featured in Neil Clerehan's 1960 book 'Best Houses'. The characteristic front elevation is being obliterated by the addition of a... raised pool deck. No architect's sign on the job."
The house is on the National Trust register, but fails to make the grade for Heritage Victoria (who have registered two other Victorian houses in the street).
Gerd and Renate Bloack also designed the Siemens building in Church Street Richmond (1964), the Nunawading Civic Centre in Whitehorse Rd, and the Yarralumla mosque.
