Protection in Action: Humanitarian Response in Armed Conflict

The School of Anthropology, Geography and Environmental Studies (SAGES) of the University of Melbourne together with Oxfam Australia will jointly convene a conference on humanitarian protection in February 2006. This conference, supported by the Australian Council for International Development and AUSTCARE, is intended to develop the level of understanding of humanitarian protection amongst Australian based humanitarian workers (including students pursuing a career in the aid/development sector) as well as contribute to debates on humanitarian protection at an international level.

In the past ten years, humanitarian agencies have incorporated protection concepts into their mandates with a view to changing the nature of humanitarian practice and helping to save lives.

This conference will examine the protection of civilians in contexts of conflict, from current practices and challenges to directions for the future.

Through a combination of plenary sessions and hands-on workshops, participants will be provided with a forum to exchange ideas and work through issues related to the implementation of protection strategies and practices in the field. Please see the program for more details on speaker and workshop topics.

Dates: 22 and 23 February 2006

Location: SAGES Building, University of Melbourne, Parkville Campus, Victoria, Australia.

Sorry, applications closed on the 17th, but I'm sure you could call and see if they had any places left if you wanted to attend.
