Melbourne Latin American Film Festival

Melbourne Latin American Film Festival

5 days, 20 films from 9 countries
February 23th to 27th – ACMI Cinemas, Federation Square, Melbourne

Twenty films with a greater range of styles, subjects and countries than ever before, highlights include the charming opening night film VIVA CUBA (yep, from Cuba) followed by a big Latin American fiesta with live Latin music, food and drinks, DJs, piñatas & prizes.

FEATURES
Feature films include the blacker-than-black comedy of Colombia’s COMO EL GATO Y EL RATON (A Game of Cat and Mouse), Cuba’s NADA, which mixes romantic comedy with political satire, and from Brazil, closing night film CIDADE BAIXA (Lower City), the spectacular new film from the makers of City of God and Motorcycle Diaries.

The spotlight on Argentina includes a rich program of recent features, docos and animation. There are two fascinating docos that look at the human face of Argentina’s economic crisis (OSCAR and DIAS DE CARTON (Cardboard Days), the irreverent animated feature MERCANO EL MARCIANO (Mercano the Martian), and director Pablo Trapero’s celebrated EL BONAERENSE, follow up to his debut MUNDO GRUA (Crane World).

DOCUMENTARIES
The documentary program includes films about the hip-hop scene in Cuba (INVENTOS: HIP-HOP CUBANO) and Colombia (RESISTENCIA: HIP-HOP IN COLOMBIA), the struggle of the indigenous Mapuche in Chile (UXUF XIPAI (Plunder), and the extraordinary real-life story of Juchitan, a town in southern Mexico where homosexuality is completely accepted as a third gender (JUCHITAN: QUEER PARADISE). From Brazil, master filmmaker Eduardo Coutinho‚s touching EDIFICIO MASTER looks at the human stories of the 1000-plus residents of one of in Rio de Janeiro many mega-high-rise apartments. A standout is the short doco I WONDER WHAT YOU WILL REMEMBER OF SEPTEMBER, in which New York based Chilean artist Cecilia Cornejo contrasts the impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York with the September 11, 1973 military coup in Chile.

Another highlight of the documentary program is the inclusion of two feature-length docos that trace the lives of two icons of twentieth century Latin American culture. VIOLA CHILENSIS (The Story of Violeta Parra) is the first complete account of the remarkable life of Chilean singer/songwriter Violeta Parra, while RAYMUNDO charts the life and legacy of the Argentinean guerrilla filmmaker Raymundo Gleyzer, the father of militant cinema.

The festival will also revisit hits from Filmoteca’s monthly screenings. A sell-out in October, WHAT’S UP WITH VENEZUELA returns with new footage to update the latest in Socialist president Hugo Chavez’s oil-rich Venezuela. And Melbourne-based, Salvadorean-born filmmaker Salvador Castro’s doco EL CAMBIO ES HOY, on his homeland’s 2004 presidential elections, will screen again along with a program of new short films from El Salvador.

The 2006 Melbourne Latin American Film Festival (MLAFF) is presented by Melbourne Filmoteca: Latin American, Spanish & Portuguese Film Group in association with ACMI.
