Doctors, musicians and HOPE worldwide (Australia) have joined together for the Making a Difference charity concert on Thursday 16 February at the Central Hall, 22 Brunswick St, Fitzroy from 6:30pm to raise money for health and education programs in Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea.

Following his own experiences in Afghanistan, Dr Mark Timlin said "it's vital that we break down the barriers for people in need and realise that we can all get personally involved in some way. Through support for essential health and education programs, we're helping to provide the tools for Afghans and Papua New Guineas to help themselves."

Guaranteed to be a fun and informative evening, this fundraising gala has been organised by HOPE worldwide (Australia) and kindly supported by partners, Afghan Australian Volunteers Associations, St Vincent's Health and the Australasian Catholic University.

The idea for this charity concert evolved from a St Vincent's Afghan information evening held in 2001 in the wake of September 11 to promote understanding about Afghanistan. It is hoped that this 'Making a Difference' charity concert will be an annual event promoting understanding between peoples of all cultural backgrounds and economic circumstances to help and support each other.

For those keen to find out more about how to break down barriers between cultures and human needs, the evening features informative talks by Dr Mark Timlin and his wife Vicki about their experiences as relief workers in Afghanistan; Dr Nouria Salehi, a prominent Afghan seen by many as the 'mother' of Afghans living in Australia; Dr Andrew Dent, Director of St Vincent's Emergency department, who is actively involved in medical work in Papua New Guinea and Dr Graham Ogle, Director of HOPE worldwide (Australia) who has set up and manages pioneering medical programs in PNG and other third world countries.

Dr Graham Ogle, who sees first hand how funds make a difference said 'we now have higher-profile programs, but the relatively small 'Nine Mile' clinic in PNG is the one I am most proud of, as in their unassuming way dedicated staff provide comprehensive medical care to tens of thousands of people each year. It repeatedly draws praise from the community, government, and aid bodies. It has been the launching pad for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and clinical research work, and sets the benchmark for medical care in Papua New Guinea.

Young up-and-coming Melbourne musicians including pianist, Carissa Christianto, pianist, Sonoko Nishio, The Pisces Quintet, vocalist, Samantha Putrino and pianist, Ke Lin will delight guests with their performances. Thrill to the sounds of Beethoven, Schubert, Donizetti, Puccini, Ravel and Percy Grainger.

You can also bid for a range of items (luxury nights away, tickets to sporting events, and interesting household items) kindly donated by local businesses in a fast and furious fundraising auction led by a professional auctioneer. Craft from Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea will also be available to buy on the night.>
