17,000 children died in earthquake

ISLAMABAD, Dec 28 : Over 84 per cent primary schools, 74 per cent secondary schools, 12 out of 14 degree colleges and two universities have demolished and 85 per cent hospitals have been destroyed in the massive earthquake which rocked several parts of Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.


This was disclosed by Chairman of Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority of Earthquake Affectees Lt. Gen. Zubair, who along with Brig. Sher Afgan Niazi and Col. Tariq visited Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Besides this about 17,000 children have died in the devastated areas during earthquake.

Gen. Zubair said that government has provided relief to the affectees immediately and construction work will start from April next. He said that construction work will be done by the affectees themselves while the government will supervise the activities so that nobody could blame the government if some problem occurs in the future, when first installment towards construction will be given to the owner an agreement will also be got signed about the quality of the work.

The affected people will be rehabilitated in their own areas and they will be assisted in starting their business so that population should not move to the cities.

He appealed to the business community and the private sector to come forward and take part in the construction work. He further said that affectees are not willing to leave their native places. He said that Muzaffarabad will be constructed as a Model city, Sui gas will be provided and hoped that culture of the area could be changed.
