NEW BUILDING & NEW HORIZONS
at the Australian Museum

Friday 7 July 2005

Brian Sherman, President of the Australian Museum Trust and Frank Howarth, Director of the Australian Museum are pleased to announce the architectural firm Johnson Pilton Walker have been appointed to design a new science and collections storage building for the Museum.

In the June 2004 budget, the NSW government announced it would allocate $40.9 million over five years to the Australian Museum for its renewal program. The renewal program will help alleviate critical accommodation issues which have affected the Australian Museum over the past few decades.

The new building will accommodate some of the Museum’s 80 research scientists and laboratories as well as storing part of the approximately 14.5 million specimens from the collection. The construction of the new building on the Museum’s site is due to commence in late 2006.

“The appointment of the highly-esteemed architectural firm Johnson Pilton Walker led by design team Richard Johnson and Graeme Dix is a step forward for the Australian Museum’s renewal program. The new science wing is a much needed addition for one of Australia’s most significant scientific institutions and an investment in the future of Australian science,” said Frank Howarth, Director of the Australian Museum.

“The project offers the opportunity to re-invigorate this great Sydney institution with a new layer that expresses the contemporary relevance of the Museum, its collections and its research ” said Richard Johnson from Johnson Pilton Walker, the architectural firm.

The renewal project also includes a major refurbishment of a number of public exhibition spaces in the Museum due for completion in late 2008.
