Nias Island building on "at risk" list
A two hundred year old building on Nias Island is on the World Monument Fund's "Sites at Risk" list for 2006. The 20m high Omo Hada complex has been in a deteriorating state for some time, but survived both the recent tsunami and earthquakes. Credit Card company American Express is to contribute towards the restoration, and the hope is that the restoration will spark interest in traditional styles of construction among those invoved in the island's reconstruction efforts. Concrete constructions fared badly in the March, 2005 earthquake.
