Life in the Urban Landscape

New preconditions of urban development

Growing attention is focusing on cities as complex systems and on their vital importance for social development. In large parts of the world, the past few decades have witnessed a transformation of the preconditions of urban development. By 2007 more than half the earth’s population is expected to be living in towns and cities, and the importance of urban communities for quality of life, the environment and economic growth will increase accordingly. As a consequence of globalisation, there is growing competition between cities and urban regions for new investments, both public and private. The urban environment is becoming progressively more important in competition between cities to attract businesses, skilled manpower, students, tourists and events (....)

The main conference will take place at Chalmers University of Technology over four days, May 29th – June 1st, with side events on June 2nd – 3rd. Focus will be on the co-operative work, the integration of systems, sectors and actors in urban development and the interlinkages between the various systems, actors and levels of governance. The programme is structured around four main themes, with a combination of plenary sessions, parallel workshops and debates.
