Well, it depends! But verandah's were an early Australian response to the prevaling environmental conditions. They shade the windows and keep the house cool (as well as present a nice place to sit). The below image is of Burlington Terrace (1886-1871) in East Melbourne, notible for its verandahs.
There are many examples of course. I am just keen on this one at the moment!
And don't forget the "Queenslander" from up north. A house on stilts to keep it cool!
