Niche Media, publishers of Architectural Review Australia and (Inside) Interior Design Review, are looking for an experienced editor with a passion for architecture and design to manage content for their latest online offering, Australian Design Review.

While only three months old, Australian Design Review is fast becoming a favourite online haunt of Australia’s design professionals. Closely affiliated with the well-established magazines Architectural Review Australia and (Inside), Australian Design Review is a unique and ambitious offering for the local market, combining streaming video with daily news and events updates, as well as much of the feature length, high quality design critique readers have come to expect from the print titles. For the right candidate, this role is a rare opportunity to be closely involved in the production of some of Australia’s most well respected design publications, with a huge potential for growth within the field.

Candidates for the role should be able to point to writing and publishing experience, as well as knowledge of Australian architecture and design. Tertiary qualifications in architecture and design will be highly regarded, however the ability to turn around accurate and compelling copy, fast, is essential. In this regards, candidates must also have training and experience in editing and/or journalism in order to be considered.

Responsibilities include:

Generation of new editorial material, including proofed copy, imagery and video. In particular, this entails daily updates of the news and events section. At the end of every issue production cycle for AR/(Inside), salient news material will also need to be selected and prepared for print publication.

Coordinate the re-purposing of existing editorial material from (Inside) and AR for use on the ADR website.

Control, filter and manage all solicited and unsolicited editorial proposals received for the website. In particular, submissions to the user-generated sections will need to be audited for inappropriate material.

Work collaboratively with the web design team, led by Jon Price, and the print editorial team (Mat Ward, Jan Henderson) to ensure timely completion of production on ADR and synergy between the print titles and the website.

Work collaboratively with the National Sales Managers of AR and (Inside) to ensure excellent levels of communication between sales and editorial.

Attend and participate in relevant industry events and activities, in the promotion of the ADR brand and reputation.

Write editorial for ADR as and when required.

Contribute to the website’s success through a productive involvement in all key areas of the title’s activities, including production, sub-editing, sales, subs and events.

Management of our online communications and marketing, which includes the production of a weekly newsletter, and daily updates to ADR’s Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Knowledge and skill requirements

Professional and high quality editorial and content management skills, including the ability to accurately edit copy to Australian and in-house style standards and a familiarity with basic web-editing principles.

Strong grasp of the written word with the ability to turn out articulate copy quickly. Training and experience in journalism and/or editing essential.

Thorough understanding of the industry and professional community that the website and magazines serve.

Ability to drive and control a smooth efficient production process within a time-constrained environment.

Ability to build strong relationships with a wide range of people both within the Niche Media organisation, and externally with a range of contributors, partners and clients.

Ability to present the ‘face’ of editorial at a public dimension, at events and industry activities.

Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Mac O/S

Knowledge and ability in video editing and/or Final Cut Pro highly regarded

The position, based in South Melbourne, will require a part-time commitment of 25 hours, 5 days a week, however as the website continues to gain momentum this is likely to increase to a full-time commitment. Likewise, for a candidate with initiative and drive this position offers enormous scope for development.
