Bob Brown and his Senate seat

Bob Brown, Greens Leader of the Senate, is in a spot of bother. Having won a court case against logging in the Wielangta forest, the case went to appeal. The loggers won the appeal and the court ordered Brown pay costs of $240,000, by the end of June. If he is unable to pay, the loggers are threatening to have him declared bankrupt.

Bankruptcy would mean expulsion from the Senate, and would result in a liberal majority over the Labour/Greens voting block - it would shift the balance of power.

The Hobart Mercury reports, "Dr Brown said he had no doubt the Tasmanian Government and other "minions of the logging industry" were seeking to force him from parliament because of his long term quest to end all logging of Australia's native forests."
