<div class="pipesDescription">Although the idea of cross-disciplinary, community-engaged practice has gained ground in recent years, the professional practice of architecture and the academic institution can often seem strangely detached; not only from one another, but from other disciplines and the world (the community) at large.</div>

<div class="pipesDescription">Brendan Jones (director of Melbourne-based practice Antarctica) and Ian Watts (background in healthcare and social work; now making the transition to architecture at Antarctica) will present three design studios run at RMIT since 2007 that have attempted to bridge these worlds - addressing concerns as challenging as healthcare design in an indigenous community - and reflect, with the help of students, on the lessons learned.</div>
