VOLUNTEER REGISTER AND OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP

Many Australians are contacting Australian Volunteers International to offer their assistance to help those communities devastated by the tsunamis that have recently hit Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Burma, the Maldives and Malaysia. Following are some ways in which you can contribute to the Indian Ocean Disaster.

For those Australians wanting to volunteer their support, Australian Volunteers International is now taking registrations for volunteers to assist with the immediate emergency relief effort as well as those interested in helping to rebuild communities over the long term.

Please register your interest by completing an an on-line application form (you will need to register as a Virtual Volunteer if you are a new user) including the following steps:

Please follow the registration/login instructions.
select the 'Tsunami Disaster Relief Volunteer Register' option
at step 3 select the 'overseas position' type; enter 'Tsunami-your occupation' in the position title field and '100' as the position number
Please include your availability status on your CV - when are you available from and for how long?
Your details will be retained for future reference.

Please bear in mind that very specific skills are needed from people for immediate relief work. Experience in a developing country would be helpful but relevant language skills will be essential. At present volunteers are being sought to assist Australian Government relief activities in the following fields:

Indonesia: Indonesian language skills are essential for all these categories: trained logisticians, preferably with emergency/disaster experience, to facilitate and coordinate charter vehicles and equipment; water and sanitation engineers/specialists, particularly those with experience in the affected areas; nurses and general health workers.

Indian Ocean: specialists in infectious disease control, particularly those with experience with water-borne diseases; public health officials; water and sanitation engineers/specialists; trained logisticians, preferably experienced in communications and transport. Only people who believe their skills and qualifications are suitable should contact the AVI hotline.
