Launceston Architecture Week

Held annually in October, in capital cities around the country, the event coincides with the busiest time for a large demographic of the design community- students and academics. Launceston Architecture Week, September 8-12, is an opportunity for Tasmania's students, academics and northern design community members to gather for three days to share our common love of architecture and design with the public.

Lectures and activities start at the university on the Wednesday evening. The discussion on the first night focuses on 'Experiencing Architecture' lead by guest speakers from the professions of photography, sculpture, graphic design and psychology. Special guest, architectural photographer, Dianna Snape (melb) will then lead a small photography workshop on 'turd polishing: making architecture look amazing'.

Thursday nights discourse examines 'Creating Architecture' with a range of architects, including special guest, and ex-Tasmanian, David Luck (Melb), discussing their design approaches. The evening will then conclude with 'Designacide' run by our Architectural Student Society.

The final session of the week, Friday 12th September, commences at 2pm with a three hour sTute. For those not familiar with this event its an opportunity for a tutorial of your design work (it is never a crit or negative experience) or a discussion on anything you would like with architecture academics and professionals. Students that attended the last sTute commented on how much they resolved in one afternoon and gained motivation at a tough part of the semester. Attendance is free for SONA members (gold coin for non-members) but you need to pre register at utas@sona.com.au.

The evening session features a host of Tasmanian architects, including members of the young architects group, talking about 'inspiration' with a special guest lecturer Shirish Beri from India. Cheap and tasty food will also be available on the friday evening from our Malaysian Student Association.

Each evening is only a gold coin donation entry and we welcome all members of the university, design community and the general public to come along.

Hope to see you all there!!!
