Morrison calls on architects to regain status of ‘master builder’ in unprecedented attack

The cult of the “starchitect” is diminishing the role of architects in the construction industry, the boss of one of Britain’s leading commercial practices has warned.

In an extraordinary attack on signature architects, chief executive of RMJM Peter Morrison claimed such figures acted “merely as stylists” and were damaging the standing of the profession.

Morrison made the comments last week in Boston at the launch of a $2 million initiative between the firm and Harvard University to tackle a threatened world shortage of architects. They follow several clashes between the 1,200-strong RMJM and signature designers.

Two years ago, Norman Foster and Rafael Viñoly walked off the jury that chose RMJM’s designs for the massive Gazprom tower development in St Petersburg, while the firm’s most famous project — the Scottish Parliament — suffered from a dysfunctional relationship with its architectural partner EMBT.

Morrison said: “I believe that the architect of the future will be much more than merely a stylist… the architect of the future must regain the status of master builder — a position that has been diminished in recent years by the media- created phenomenon of the starchitect.

“At RMJM, while we have many great architects, we believe that no single architect is bigger than the collective process we embrace.”...
