What should we do when Greenhouse emissions soar?
According to an article published in The Age today, Victoria (Australia) has increased its greenhouse gases emissions by 30% since 1999. Climate Group's Australian director, Rupert Posner, said that despite positive statements from the Government, the state was not yet doing enough to stop the growth in pollution.(1)
Much of these emissions are generated by the production of electricity. However transport is also a great contributor to greenhouse gasesand transport is one of the most deficient, unreliable and underdeveloped services in Victoria. According to PTUA, transport accounted for up to 49% of the average households contribution to greenhouse gas emissions(2), while according to Kenneth Davison, Melbourians have increased their reliance on private cars.(3)
A key to understand how uncommitted the government is to reducing greenhouse emission can be found in the latest announcement that the cost of public transport will increase (already one of the most expensive in the world) gives another clue as to their unwillingness to tackle this issue. What an appallingly ignorant way to reduce crowded conditions on Melbourne's trains and trams!.(4)
The following quote illustrates the issue:
ANNUAL greenhouse gas emissions from energy in Victoria have soared by nearly 30% since 1990, challenging State Government claims that it is serious about tackling climate change.
By comparison, annual NSW emissions have risen by only 7% since 1990, the benchmark year for atmospheric pollution under the Kyoto international climate change treaty.(5)
