Major Earthquake in Peru: Immediate Help Needed

From Oxfam:

Major Earthquake in Peru: Immediate Help Needed
Hundreds of people have been killed, thousands injured, and tens of thousands have lost their homes after a major earthquake hit the coast of Peru. The scale of the damage is enormous, and we need your help to mount a major response.

We have set up a special fund to channel assistance directly to our on-the-ground efforts in Peru. Our staff in Peru is working to meet immediate needs, like clean water, sanitation, and basic shelter, as well as to assess the damage and plan for long-term recovery, focusing on poor and rural populations that are the most vulnerable and hardest to reach. Their work is being made more difficult by scores of aftershocks, impassable highways, collapsed bridges, and power outages that have plunged cities and towns into darkness.

We need your help today to provide relief and save lives. Please give generously.

Earthquake in Peru leaves more than 500 dead
LIMA, (PL).— The number of fatal victims of an earthquake registered in Peru rose to 510 on Thursday, according to Roberto Ognio, deputy commander of the general firefighter corps, while the situation in affected areas remains serious.

In a statement to the press, Ognio cited a figure of 437 dead, information provided earlier by the Institute of Civil Defense which also reported 16 dwellings destroyed.

The majority of the victims and the greatest damage occurred in the city of Pisco, 250 kilometers south of here, as well as in Ica.

The fire department official warned that the number of dead may rise, since it cannot be ruled out that more bodies may be found beneath the ruins of buildings destroyed by the earthquake.
