BY Malcolm Smith OF Arup

According to the United Nations 2008 is a milestone year for the human race when more than half the world’s population, (some 3.3 billion people), will for the first time live in cities. And by 2030 that number is expected to blow out to almost 5 billion. As the UN report, The State of the World Population 2007 suggests, the future quality of how well we live in these mega-cities very much depends on decisions being made now.

This lecture will focus on Arup's approach to Integrated Urbanism/Urban Design and its application to projects in China, 'eco-cities' in China (such as Dongtan) and several others that Arup are currently developing.

Malcolm Smith is Director of Arup’s global Urban Design team involved in a wide variety of projects addressing the issues of contemporary urbanism. He currently leads several cutting-edge projects including:

the design work associated with the regeneration of the 72ha Stratford Rail Lands in association with the high speed Channel Tunnel Link into London, which includes a substantial interface with the London 2012 Olympics.
overseeing the master planning for the Dongtan Eco-City project in Shanghai; an 8,400ha site adjacent sensitive ecological habitats on an island in the Yangtze river.

Malcolm has also been involved in the design of a variety of mixed-use developments in London and was a member of the recent Williams Committee which advised on a review of housing needs in the Thames gateway.

Malcolm joined Arup after completing his Masters degree in Architecture at Yale University and prior to this worked in Australia on a wide range of buildings projects.
