Forced evictions in Mumbai

According to Inter Press, several hundred thousand people have become homeless in Mumbai, India, after wholesale evictions began in December last year. According to the article (link follows), 50% of Mumbai's population live in make-shift shelters on less than ten percent of the land area. Development pressures are now making this ten percent valuable.

Milon Kothari, United Nations special rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, is quoted as describing the eviction as the ''most brutal demolition drive in recent times''.
